“The Biden Administration’s effort to globally isolate Putin has been swift, remarkable and has the potential to save thousands of lives. However, rewarding Maduro’s regime in Venezuela with the exchange of oil imports from one murderous kleptocrat for another in our own hemisphere would be a mistake and a lack of vision,” said Ms. Wasserman Schultz through a statement released through her official website.

The Democratic representative for the State of Florida, said that the moral position of the United States, and the lives of countless Venezuelans killed, displaced and suffering, should not be sacrificed to access a negligible supply of oil that could help a dangerous regional tyrant.

“The recent negotiated release of the American hostages ends a tortuous chapter for these prisoners and their families at the hands of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. I am confident that the Administration will continue to fight to bring home the seven Americans who continue to be unjustly held in Venezuela,” she added.

However, the official stressed that although this is good news about the hostages, the underlying reality in Venezuela is that its citizens live in extreme poverty and are denied basic human rights due to a corrupt and repressive dictatorship.

“Critically, neither this hostage release, nor the Russian invasion of Ukraine, justify allowing the murderous Maduro regime to quickly rack up gasoline profits while Venezuelans continue to die from lack of food, medicine and basic human rights under this autocratic government,” she emphasized.

To close, Ms. Wasserman Schultz, opined that sanctions relief should only be considered when there is a clear and irreversible commitment to re-establish free and fair presidential elections and an end to attacks to the rule of law.”
