Balmaceda Glacier (DI02243) Photo by Carlye Calvin

The Balmaceda Glacier is located on the west side of Mount Balmaceda in Bernardo O’Higgins National Park, Chile. Fifteen years ago the glacier met the sea at the base of the mountain. Now there is only exposed rock between the foot of the glacier and the sea. The blue color is caused by the absorbtion of the red wavelengths and the scattering of the blue wavelenghts as light is transmitted through the ice.
